Jack Vettriano

Jack Vettriano OBE, often referred to as the ‘people’s painter’, is famous for his nostalgic, sentimental and mysterious paintings including The Singing Butler which sold at Sotheby’s in 2004 for £750,000.

Jack Vettriano was born in Fife, Scotland, was the youngest of two children and left school at sixteen in order to pursue a career as a mining engineer. He discovered painting accidentally, as he received a set of watercolours from a girlfriend as a twenty first birthday present. Consequently, he decided to teach himself how to paint by studying and copying paintings from well known artists, enabling him to discover his own sense of style.

In 1989 Vettriano submitted two paintings to The Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition; of which both were accepted and sold on the first day. The following year he submitted three pieces which created enough public interest in his work, enabling him to focus fully on his artwork.

Since then Vettriano has had sell out solo shows in Edinburgh, London, Hong Kong and New York. New York’s International Art Fair in 1999 was particularly significant as fifty British collectors attended the opening, showing twenty of his works; all of which sold by the first day’s close.

Vettriano’s style has been compared to Edward Hopper’s, Walter Sickert’s and Brassai’s. His work has many fans and is included in the collections of Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson and Robbie Coltrane.
