Maarten Baas takes existing wooden objects, scorches them with a blowtorch, then impregnates and seals the charred surfaces with epoxy. Rather than a purely aesthetic exercise, Baas see this as a way of exploring notions of beauty. Consumer goods such as furniture are considered worthless once they become worn or damaged, but Baas poses the question, can an object be made more beautiful by partially destroying it? There is so much ornament on a baroque chair that is not necessary. Is that ornament less beautiful when half of it has burnt away, or is it more beautiful?
