NASA

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is an Executive Branch agency of the United States government, responsible for the nation's civilian space program and aeronautics and aerospace research. NASA was established by the National Aeronautics and Space Act on July 29, 1958. The agency became operational on October 1, 1958. NASA has led U.S. efforts for space exploration since, including the Apollo moon-landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle.

The photographs in our collection are a highly unusual group of original NASA photos. There are early black & white and colour 8” x 10" glossy photos, mainly with black serial numbers in the margins. They all have NASA mimeographed information on the reverse describing the subject matter in great detail and range from the early 60s to the late 90s. All of these photographs have come from NASA press releases and are authorised by NASA as well as been acknowledged by the US government. Most of these photographs have not been seen before by the general public and are therefore very rare and collectable as many contain early, difficult to obtain images.

Pictures in our collection include images of tests of lunar landing vehicles; images from Apollo 11, Gemini VIII as well as the Space Shuttle Endeavour on the ground and taken by the crew and equipment in space. We also have photographs from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, Johnson Space Center in Texas and Washington DC to name a few. Most of the photographs are striking and spectacular and contrast with the strange and gentle image of the spaceships in flight.
