'Daybed'

Horizontal depressions in the upholstered surface mark a bed's slats; holes in each corner marks the leg in each corner of a bed frame. Lying on the daybed, you are in fact lying on the
materialization of the space underneath another bed.

Solid beech frame with multi-density foams. Upholstered in a selected colour range of Bute Tiree

Rachel Whiteread

1963

Rachel Whiteread

Best known for her public artworks, most famously, 'House', in London's East End, the Holocaust memorial at the Judenplatz in Vienna and more recently 'Monument' for one of the plinths in London's Trafalgar Square.

Whiteread's first foray into furniture design came with SCP's Please Touch exhibition in 1999. Seven artists, including Whiteread were invited by SCP and arts consultancy Projects to step outside their usual working practice to design a piece of furniture. Whiteread's contribution to the project was Daybed, which mimics the form of her sculpture and demonstrates her very practical understanding of form.

Although the upholstered daybed is a classic form in the canon of modernist furniture design, 'Daybed', is closely related to a group of Whiteread's sculptures that explore space underneath a single bed.
