Simon Mackness finds inspiration in the form of words and information- especially diagrams, lists, charts and anything that tries to make order from chaos. All of his work is autobiographical; he digests information, filters it and then creates something from it. Simon Mackness is influenced by words, narratives and humour; with challenging points of view, controversy and taboo always having interested him. This has led to a lot of text based work, and work with a strong concept or narrative. In the last few years he has progressed to writing as a way to expand recurring narratives and themes in his work and is developing several scripts and screenplays.
When he was young Simon Mackness couldn't decide if he wanted to be Bill Hicks or Jeff Koons. He still can't, so simply lets ideas develop in an organic way. The most important part to Mackness’ work is the idea - always the idea. Whether it manifests itself as a script, a poster, a sculpture or an interactive project, it is always a natural conclusion to the idea. To him it is simply information presented in its most appropriate form.
Simon Mackness attended Brighton University where he gained a BA Hons Graphic Design degree and has since exhibited in London and Amsterdam. He was one one of twelve artists commissioned for the Wat Tyler Sculpture Park in Essex, and the London Transport Museum purchased his '100 Journies' poster, which now sits in their permanent collection.
