Tracy Sweeney

Tracy Sweeney graduated in 2005 with a BA First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art, specialising in Printmaking at GMIT Galway, Ireland. To build the walls and surfaces in her paintings Tracy Sweeney had to forget to be an artist. She abandoned brushes and started work with scrapers, chisels, grout and floor brushes. She started to ‘think’ like a plasterer or a builder and pondered the effects of time and weather on her formations. Her mind insisted to think about concrete, metal, faded posters and teenager’s graffiti.

Sweeney’s dismantled surfaces are re-assembled side-by side, creating a plane of unintended relationship. There are quiet segments within her work that allow the mind to rest and wander into the chaos of the adjacent texture. Each painting is made to feel like it extends beyond the four sides of its frame. On completion, her paintings become stark blocks of existing material; they are more ‘artefact’ than ‘art’. Chunks of concrete with the ‘tags’ of teenage rebellion, or metal shuttering complete with faded posters and dust, allows the viewer to ask ‘what happened here?’

Sweeney must bring each work to the brink of uselessness before she can pull it back and make it work as an exciting piece of visual art. The rules are broken. This frustration, excitement and challenge are integral to each of her compositions.
